Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling

Career development professionals interested in working with clients with physical or mental disabilities may wish to pursue a specialty practice in vocational rehabilitation counseling.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for American workers with disabilities was at 14.3 percent for the month of June 2009. During the same month, unemployment for individuals without a disability was rated at 9.5 percent.

While unemployment rates for all individuals in the United States is at an all time high, individuals with disabilities may require the assistance of a counselor who understands their unique circumstances, along with the difficulties they may encounter during a job search, in order to obtain the jobs they are seeking.

Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors assist their clients in the job search process and offer resources that may be beneficial for clients with disabilities. Counselors provide their clients with a variety of services, which may include job skills training and exploration of career interests, work history and personality traits.

Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors may work with clients and/or family members and interact with occupational therapists, physicians and previous employers to help determine the skills and capabilities of the client.
